More Information About Peter Rollins

Peter Rollins is a working philosopher (Ph.D., Queen’s University, Belfast) and a global leader in thinking about and practicing new expressions of Christian faith and spirituality in today’s world. Rollins is a founding member of the Ikon collective in Belfast, Northern Ireland and has authored two widely discussed books – How (Not) to Speak of God and The Fidelity of Betrayal.

Just found this sermon text by N.T. Wright. It is a message on Matthew 22:15-22, Jesus’ “render unto Caesar” passage. here’s a sample:

We whose histories include
rotten boroughs and beer-for-votes rallies should not be surprised at how difficult it is to stage
one-person-one-vote elections in many parts of the world today. Fewer people voted in the last
UK election than in the ‘Big Brother’ TV series. We are not in a wonderful position from which
to offer the rest of the world a permanent political solution. Anyway, the Enlightenment didn’t
only produce democracies. It also produced Napoleon, Bismark, Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin.

Provocative… and Correct!

Here’s an interesting paragraph from Gibbs and Bolger’s Emerging Churches: Creating Christian Community in Postmodern Cultures.

During modernity, the idea that Christians “participate with God” was lost. Participation was replaced by a willful God who commands all reality thgouth his awesome power. The modern God no longer had human’s ultimate good in mind. Rather, this God simply wanted complete obedience. By reducing God to power, modernity removed the sence that a good and beautiful God participates with humans. Modern people fled from this God of unbridled power. They sought to create “safe zones” (the secular realm) so that God would not interfere with them. (p. 192)

What an indictment! While this does not begin to capture all the challenges of moving forward from modernity, it grasps a very important aspect of “what went wrong” within Christendom.
